News

GLYNCO, GEORGIA – Federal Law Enforcement Training Centers’ (FLETC) Director Thomas J. Walters traveled to Pharr, Texas, Tuesday to attend a credit agreement ceremony at South Texas College (STC). The ceremony highlighted the establishment of a partnership between FLETC and the STC, whereby students who graduate from one of FLETC’s three Center Basic program are authorized to receive college credit from STC towards an Associate Degree in Applied Science - Law Enforcement.

During the ceremony, Walters reiterated that at FLETC, “We have accepted the sacred duty of preparing current and future generations of law enforcement officers to meet the extraordinary challenges our nation faces now and in the future.  They represent the best of our profession, our communities, and our country.”

In order to provide credit for previous learning experiences, explained Dr. Anahid Petrosian, interim vice president for Academic Affairs at STC, “A thorough review of the rigorous training that federal law enforcement trainees undergo was paired up with our law enforcement program offerings, and where possible, [STC] curricula were expanded to provide additional college credit. These new education pathways for our hard-working federal law enforcement professionals foster a closer relationship that will continue to build our community outreach.”

The keynote speaker at the event was U.S. Congressman Henry Cuellar, D-Laredo, who was introduced by STC President Dr. Shirley A. Reed.  Dr. Reed also provided opening remarks.

“Every day, we provide law enforcement students from over 90 federal agencies the knowledge and technical skills they need to be successful in their careers,” said Director Walters. “Together, we have the privilege of helping current and future generations of law enforcement officers meet their educational goals.  Because of this partnership, thousands of federal law enforcement professionals will have the opportunity to grow and develop personally, professionally, and academically, even after they leave FLETC.”
