Matthew L. Hanna Selected as Assistant Director for the National Capital Region Training Operations Directorate

For Immediate Release

GLYNCO, Ga. – The Federal Law Enforcement Training Centers (FLETC) is proud to announce the selection of Matthew L. Hanna as FLETC's Assistant Director for National Capital Region Training Operations Directorate (NCR).

Prior to joining FLETC, Mr. Hanna served as a DHS senior executive and Chief of Staff to the Under Secretary of the Office of Intelligence and Analysis/Chief Intelligence Officer at the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). In this role, he was responsible for implementing policies and conducting executive-level operational and intelligence oversight on behalf of the Under Secretary. Mr. Hanna directed the implementation of the DHS Intelligence and Analysis "Training Optimization Initiative," which endeavored to bring 22 disparate component intelligence training programs into a revised model of training efficiencies for DHS.

Before his assignment to the DHS Office of Intelligence and Analysis, Mr. Hanna served as the Senior Law Enforcement Advisor to the United States Council on Transnational Organized Crime while detailed from U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP). While at CBP, he served as an Associate Chief, U.S. Border Patrol. In this role, Mr. Hanna co-led the implementation of eight lines of effort to combat transnational organized crime as directed in Presidential Executive Order 13773. Additionally, he developed the methodology and data call to perform an all-of-government budget assessment of federal agencies' allocation of monetary and personnel resources dedicated to identifying, interdicting, and dismantling transnational criminal organizations.

Mr. Hanna served in various roles of increasing responsibility within CBP, culminating as the Director/Assistant Director with oversight of the Commissioner's Situation Room.  In this role, he led operations for the Situation Room, which served as an Incident Command Center, Crisis Action Team Center, Emergency Operations Center, and central information coordination and communications hub for CBP during significant emerging events and national incidents.

Mr. Hanna also served as the Chief of Staff for the CBP Office of Intelligence and the Acting Deputy Assistant Commissioner for CBP Congressional Affairs. While assigned to CBP Congressional Affairs, he initiated a Legislative Proposal Process for CBP and maintained extensive relationships with members of Congress to promote CBP's legislative priorities for positive change.  These responsibilities followed Mr. Hanna's DHS fellowship to the U.S. Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee. He drafted legislation, performed oversight, and carried out congressional investigative functions on behalf of the Committee.

Mr. Hanna has over 24 years of federal law enforcement and national security experience and began his federal career as a Border Patrol Agent assigned to San Diego, California. He will start his new role on July 6, 2021.
