It didn’t take long for Jabri Mack to get the hang of casting a fishing line Thursday morning.
Within mere minutes of throwing his fishing line into Duck Pond at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center, the Glynn Academy student reeled in his first fish of the day.
He held it up, and with a big smile, took a picture.
Without hesitation, he threw his fishing line back into the water in the hunt for more fi sh.
“I’m going for 20,” Mack shouted.
The excitement Mack felt was shared by the other dozen students fishing alongside him during the 15th Annual Two-Way Sport Fishing Club’s Special Olympics Fishing Rodeo.
In total, an estimated 200 kids from Glynn County schools and the Morning Star Baptist Treatment Center caught fish during the event.
Fishing wasn’t the only activity available to students at FLETC, which hosted the event for the 11th consecutive year. At the baseball field, students played kickball and softball, jumped in a bouncy house and had the opportunity to get their faces painted.
But it’s the fishing that produces memories for participants, says Mike Evans, a FLETC employee who coordinated the event.
“The teachers tell me that of all the events they do, this is the one (students) remember year after year,” he said. “They like (and)they enjoy (other activities), but this is the one they talk about all year long.”
“All of them catch fish, and they have great time,” he said. “It’s just a good thing.”
