On May 17, 2021, the Federal Law Enforcement Training Centers (FLETC) entered into a Memorandum of Agreement with the Glynn County Fire Department (GCFD) to conduct in-service training at the Glynco facility. This training includes both live fire and non-live fire events.
FLETC has thirty-two Capehart family housing buildings constructed by the U.S. Navy in 1956-57. After FLETC arrived at Glynco in 1975, the agency used these buildings in a variety of classroom and practical training capacities for nearly forty years and they became known as the “Raid Houses.” Most of these facilities have been taken offline, not utilized for training since approximately 2017, and are scheduled for future demolition. These circumstances offered the opportunity for a partnership between FLETC and GCFD, the purposes of which are two-fold: first, GCFD helps FLETC demolish these facilities in a safe, cost-effective manner that is representative of our role as an effective steward of federal resources; second, GCFD gains valuable live-fire experience - virtually impossible to replicate anywhere else - that will enable them to respond safely and with maximum effectiveness to future real-world fires in the local community.
This training is conducted in a manner that is safe, environmentally sound, and in compliance with all published Federal and Georgia Department of Natural Resources, Environmental Protection Division, policies, guidelines and procedures. FLETC abates each building of any hazardous materials before any training can occur in or around an identified facility. Further, GCFD makes certain that two fire engines are available and remain on FLETC throughout the duration of the live fire training.
On June 24, 2021, GCFD conducted live-fire training on four facilities at FLETC. The training was conducted in accordance with the requirements identified above, and accomplished both purposes for which the partnership was established. FLETC looks forward to continuing to support this training and helping ensure the safety of the men and women of the GCFD.
