GLYNCO, Ga. – In consultation with a DHS Medical Officer and the Federal Law Enforcement Training Centers (FLETC) Medical Liaison Officer, FLETC leadership has temporarily suspended training operations at the FLETC-Glynco Training Delivery Point effective August 2, 2021. The pause is due to precautions and safety measures surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic and an increase in COVID-19 positive test results in the student population. FLETC’s leadership determined that a halt in training was the best course of action to reinforce its risk mitigation and rapid response procedures and strategically analyze and target the effects of the COVID-19 delta coronavirus variant on FLETC’s population.
Since resuming training in June of 2020, following a three-month pause to establish effective COVID-19 protocols, FLETC has maintained strict testing, masking, and social distancing protocols in which students were tested multiple times before arrival and tested again once they arrived for their programs. Masking and social distancing was practiced on-campus in accordance with the latest CDC guidance.
FLETC has detailed response procedures to rapidly address any situation when a student or staff member tests positive for COVID-19 or becomes symptomatic after training begins. FLETC houses suspected and confirmed students in special sick-in-quarters rooms set aside for that purpose. FLETC has response personnel assigned to each location who have completed a 40-hour certification course from the Johns Hopkins University to serve as Contact Tracers. This cadre of tracers performs contact tracing for any reported positive case within our student, staff, and contractor population groups. FLETC also works closely with local healthcare and emergency management officials and hospitals at all training delivery points.
“COVID-19 has brought many challenges, and now the delta variant is also proving to be a challenge. We understand the critical nature of our mission. We learn every day how to better protect our ability to execute that mission while we protect our students, staff, and the people of the communities in which we operate,” said FLETC Director Walters. “My goal is to get back to providing training as soon as it is safe to do so.”
FLETC provides career-long training to law enforcement professionals to help them fulfill their responsibilities safely and proficiently. FLETC’s training includes distance-learning program eFLETC and staff dedicated to supporting the eFLETC mission and FLETC training. Through strategic partnerships, FLETC prepares the federal law enforcement community to safeguard the American people, our homeland, and our values.
