Program Syllabus/Curriculum

The Cryptocurrency for Investigators Training Program’s (CFITP) primary focus is on identifying and investigating cryptocurrency transactions in a criminal investigation. The program assists law enforcement personnel in gathering information regarding background knowledge of cryptocurrency, common forms of cryptocurrency, methods by which criminals exploit the cryptocurrency system, and techniques by which investigators at the state, local, and federal levels can effectively address cryptocurrency issues during an investigation. The program has an evolving focus, meaning it relies heavily on guest instructors/investigators from the field to provide briefings and case studies on the most up-to-date schedule and methods criminals use to profit from the cryptocurrency system. The program also benefits from presentations by Assistant U.S. Attorneys regarding legal considerations and procedures for seizure of cryptocurrency. The program is interspersed with relevant case studies and hands-on activities related to cryptocurrency investigations.  The blocks of instruction include:

  • The fundamental principles of cryptocurrency.
  • Legal considerations for obtaining records and seizing cryptocurrency.
  • Field techniques for detecting cryptocurrency transactions in an investigation.
  • Internet-based investigations.
